What is IMAPI?

IMAPI stands for Image Mastering API, which is a Windows API that allows applications to create and burn images to CD, DVD, and Blu-ray discs. IMAPI supports various disc formats, such as ISO 9660, Joliet, UDF, and DVD-Video. IMAPI also supports various disc features, such as multisession, bootable discs, and disc spanning.

IMAPI was first introduced in Windows XP as IMAPI 1.0. However, this version had some limitations and drawbacks, such as:

  • It only supported CD-R and CD-RW discs.

  • It did not support DVD or Blu-ray discs.

  • It did not support dual-layer discs or disc-at-once (DAO) mode.

  • It did not support burning multiple images at once or verifying the burned data.

  • It did not provide a user interface or progress feedback for the burning process.

To address these issues and provide more functionality and compatibility, Microsoft released IMAPI 2.0 in 2007 as an update package for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. IMAPI 2.0 added support for DVD and Blu-ray discs, dual-layer discs, DAO mode, multiple image burning, data verification, user interface, and progress feedback. IMAPI 2.0 also improved the performance and reliability of the burning process.

What are the known issues of IMAPIv2.0 for Windows XP?
