Identifying as a sexual minority does not necessarily put youth at higher risk for depression or suicide. However, compared to their straight peers, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth are more likely to face a combination of complex factors that, in turn, put them at higher risk for depression and suicide. Experiences of stigma, prejudice, and discrimination create stressful environments for sexual minority youth. They experience substantially higher levels of bullying than their non-LGBTQ peers, with transgender youth facing the most hostile school climates.

Research suggests that schools can foster well-being among students who identify as LGBTQ by adopting evidence-based curricula, programs, and services that explicitly promote their health and well-being. This includes implementing activities such as gay-straight alliances and sexual education that address the needs of sexual minority youth. Schools can also adopt anti-bullying policies that specifically prohibit bullying based on sexual orientation. In fact, making schools safer places for LGBTQ youth tends to make them more positive places for all youth.

Damaging wind from thunderstorms is much more common than damage from tornadoes. In fact, many confuse damage produced by straight-line winds and often erroneously attribute it to tornadoes. Given recent severe weather with both damaging straight-line winds and a few weak tornadoes across the local area, we decided to share a little "science" to explain the difference and common misconceptions!

When extensive damage is noted, the National Weather Service may dispatch a damage survey team to determine the cause and nature of wind damage. Survey teams look for evidence of a circulation in debris fields to determine if the damage is straight-line winds or a tornado. Based on the degree of damage and damage indicators, a maximum wind speed is assigned to either the downburst or tornado.

At retirement, APERS members can choose between five different benefit options, or ways to structure their retirement benefits (not including PAW or DROP). The straight life option is most frequently chosen and forms the baseline for the four "A" and "B" options. This article describes the straight life benefit option.

Straight life is the simplest benefit option offered by APERS. The straight life option pays a monthly annuity directly to the retiree for life. On the death of the retiree, the monthly payments end. Unlike the other benefit options, straight life has no provisions for extending annuity payments to a beneficiary or survivor (for an exception, see the section on changes in marital status below).

Members who elect the straight life option and marry after retirement, or within one year before retiring, may choose to cancel the straight life option and elect option B-50 or B-75 to provide continuing lifetime benefits to the spouse. If a retiree receiving benefits under the straight life option dies within 12 months of the effective date of retirement, the retiree's spouse may be eligible for an annuity under the same terms as the B-75 option.

All benefit calculations begin by establishing the "straight life rate" (also called "computed straight life annuity"). If an APERS member chooses the straight life option for regular retirement or disability retirement, then no further calculation is needed, and the member receives an annuity at the straight-life rate. If the member takes early retirement or chooses another benefit option, APERS first calculates the member's straight life rate and then adjusts it according to the pre-defined formula for that option.

When a straight-line method is used, revenue from a sale is recognized over the revenue recognition term based on the start and end dates and recognition method chosen. The mid-month start date and end dates are included in the revenue recognition term. 041b061a72
