Buy California Poppy Seeds

Sowing: Sow California poppy seeds in early spring, planting the seed 1/4" below the surface of the soil; keep the soil lightly moist until germination, which should occur in 2-3 weeks at a soil temperature of 60-65 degrees. In USDA Zones 7 and warmer, bulk poppy seeds can be fall planted. Poppies do not transplant well, and must be planted while very small if started indoors.

Seed Saving: When saving bulk California poppy seeds, keep in mind that the resulting flowers sometimes revert to the dominant orange or red blossoms. After the petals drop off, a capsule will form and turn from green to tan. Since the capsules will eventually split and explosively release their seeds, cut them off as soon as the color begins to turn and the seed inside has ripened to grayish black. Spread the capsules out to dry for several days, then split them to remove the seeds. Store the cleaned seeds in a cool, dry place.

My seeds just arrived but it's too cold to plant them. We had snow last night and more is forecast for the next 3 days. Therefore, I'm unable to say whether the seeds are viable or what the flowers look like. Maybe I can update this review by late summer.

Thanks for the speedy delivery of the 2 pounds of seeds. I bought a hand-crank spreader and scattered the whole amount on the vacant lot next door (50' by 130'). I hope we see a lot of orange flowers by about February. I did not prepare the soil. The area is littered with weed-whacked 2-foot grass laying flat. There are thousands of little sprouts now, probably a lot of oxalis, which is an ubiquitous pest in these parts. Hoping for a pretty result. What do you folks think? Thanks,J. Dwyer

Sow seeds directly into a finely textured, well drained garden bed in full sun as early in spring as the ground can be worked. Plant as early as possible in spring, as poppies can handle light frost and bloom best and longest when plants get a good start in cool weather. In mild winter climates, Poppies can also be sown in late fall to overwinter for spring bloom. Except in very poor soil, these California poppies will grow and flower readily with no added fertilizer. Space seeds several inches apart, cover 1/4 inch deep, and firm soil gently. Keep soil moist as seedlings emerge. Weed young seedlings carefully. If seedlings come up very thickly, thin poppies early but delay final thinning until seedlings are well established in spring. Final spacing should be 6 inches apart as plants need room to grow and bloom.

If someone else has started a trail, do not add to the damage. Follow the trail map to avoid compounding damage to illegal trails. Please be a responsible park user and leave the park as nice as you found it.Do NOT pick the wildflowersEverything is protected, from the tiniest wildflower to the rocks on the trail. Damaging or collecting anything from the park is prohibited. Poppies wilt immediately after being picked, and they hold the seeds that we need for the next year's wildflowers. Do not bring dogsDogs are NOT allowed, with the exception of trained service animals. Comfort animals are not trained service animals, and are not permitted. Pets cannot be left alone in cars; there is no shaded parking and vehicles quickly heat to fatal temperatures. We request, but do not require, that trained service dogs wear distinguishing markers to avoid misleading other visitors.

The Antelope Valley is located in the western Mojave Desert at an elevation ranging from 2600--3000 feet, making it a high desert environment. This State Natural Reserve is located on California's most consistent poppy-bearing land. Other wildflowers: owl's clover, lupine, goldfield, cream cups, and coreopsis, to name a few, share the desert grassland to produce a mosaic of color and fragrance each spring. As unpredictable as nature - the intensity and duration of the wildflower bloom varies yearly. California State Parks does not water or use any other means to stimulate the flowers; the land is preserved to only be influenced by the natural forces that had once influenced all of our surroundings. The broad views of this landscape provide eyefuls of brilliant wildflower colors and fragrance. Whether you most enjoy expansive fields or the close-up study of a single flower, this is the place to visit.

The Californian Poppy Golden West is a spectacular bloomer producing beautiful golden Poppies with orange hearts. It readily establishes from California Poppy flower seeds, and it is highly drought-tolerant and tends to perform well in just about any environment, even arid and inhospitable ones. When planted in mass groupings, California Poppies have tremendous visual appeal.

Native pollinators like bumblebees, sweat bees, and mining bees also enjoy poppy pollen, and so does the European bee (Apis mellifera). The seeds serve as a source of food for small mammals and birds.

They can also be sown in early spring in areas that experience frost for late spring and summer blooms extending into fall. You can broadcast your seeds as suggested or be strategic when sowing them by placing more attention on spacing.

Cover them lightly with soil to help them stay secure during periods of wind or rainfall. This approach will lessen the need to thin seedlings. If seeds are not receiving adequate rainfall, provide them with weekly waterings to keep the soil consistently moist until they have sprouted.

Eschscholzia californica is a member of the Papaveraceae family. Native to the western United States and Mexico, the California poppy has brilliant orange petals that close at night and during overcast conditions, yet open wide under the sun. The herb is commonly combined in botanical formulations, drunk as California poppy tea, or macerated as a tincture.

The California poppy is the state flower of California, a tender perennial plant bearing blue-green leaves and 2 to 4 inch (5 to 10 cm) wide flowers that open in bright sun and close on cloudy days and at night. The California poppy is considered an ancient plant whose origins are not entirely known. Native Americans in California prized them as a source of food and for the oil that could be extracted from the plant. Dried aerial portions of the California poppy are most frequently used as a tincture or infusion. Commonly combined with birthwort, night-blooming cereus, kava, lavender, passionflower, St. John's wort, and/or valerian.

California Poppy is as easy to start from seed as it is to grow! Seeds can be directly sown in spring after all danger of frost has passed with no pre-treatment. If you have a shorter growing season and want to get a head start, you can start them indoors 2-3 weeks before your estimated last frost date. In zones 6-10 they can even be fall sown. Just lightly press the seeds into soil and do not cover, as they need light to germinate. Keep moist. Space plants 2 feet apart.

These orange beauties are native to many of the states in the US and are particularly hardy once established. We tossed a few of these wildflower seed balls into our front yard and a few months later we had 30+ poppy flowers shining back at us during their daily sun salutations. We can't help but smile when we see them, they just have that power to put a big fat grin across your face.

A: Each Seedle contains between 5 and 25 wildflower seeds depending on the flower variety and their germination rate. Each Seedle can cover up to 1 square foot of space, but for a denser look of flower place 3-4 per square foot.

This strawberry sherbet-colored California poppy is unbelievably gorgeous! The petals are like little bundles of silk in sunset colors! 1.5' tall plants are prefect in beds, borders, and containers. Hardy from zones 3-10, and average 60-75 days to bloom.

As the name implies, the California poppy is native to California, although it is also found in Washington, Oregon, and New Mexico and is now naturalized in Australia, Argentina, and South Africa. Unlike some other members of the poppy family, the California poppy herb does not contain narcotic alkaloids. Various Native American peoples used the blossoms and pollen collected from the flowers to make skin and hair preparations. The seeds are still popular in cooking today and the leaf can be made into a tea blend, though some prefer the benefits through a California poppy tincture because of the grassy taste.
