What is Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi?

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (transl. A Match Made By God) is a 2008 Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy film written and directed by Aditya Chopra and produced by him and his father Yash Chopra under their banner of Yash Raj Films. The film tells the story of Surinder Sahni (Shah Rukh Khan), a shy and simple man who works as an office clerk, and Taani (Anushka Sharma), a lively and cheerful girl who loves dancing. They get married under tragic circumstances, but Taani does not love Surinder. To win her heart, Surinder disguises himself as Raj, a fun-loving and flamboyant alter ego, and joins Taani's dance class. What follows is a journey of laughter, tears, joy, pain, music, dance, and love.

Plot summary and main characters

The film begins with Surinder attending the wedding of his former professor's daughter, Taani. He falls in love with her at first sight, but does not express his feelings. On the same day, Taani's fiance and his family die in a road accident. Taani's father suffers a heart attack and asks Surinder to marry Taani before he dies. Surinder agrees out of respect for his professor, and Taani reluctantly accepts to fulfill her father's last wish.

After the wedding, Surinder takes Taani to his home in Amritsar. He tries to make her comfortable, but she remains aloof and depressed. Surinder understands her situation and gives her space. He also asks his friend Bobby (Vinay Pathak), a hair salon owner, for advice on how to impress Taani.

One day, Taani tells Surinder that she wants to participate in a dance reality show called "Dancing Jodi". Surinder agrees to let her go, but secretly enrolls himself as her partner, disguised as Raj, a loud and outgoing Punjabi man. He changes his appearance with the help of Bobby and a pair of contact lenses.

Taani is surprised to see Raj as her partner, but she likes his enthusiasm and energy. She also feels a connection with him, as he reminds her of her late fiance. Raj flirts with Taani and tries to make her happy. He also challenges her to express her love for Surinder, which she fails to do.

As the show progresses, Taani and Raj become one of the finalists. Surinder is torn between his love for Taani and his respect for her choice. He decides to reveal his true identity to Taani after the show ends. However, on the day of the final, Taani discovers a wedding anniversary gift from Surinder, which contains two tickets to Japan, a country she always wanted to visit. She realizes that Surinder loves her deeply and sincerely. She also finds out that Raj is Surinder's alter ego, and that he did everything to make her happy.

Taani confronts Surinder and tells him that she loves him as he is, and not as Raj. She also apologizes for not appreciating him earlier. Surinder is overjoyed and hugs her. They perform their final dance together, expressing their love for each other. The film ends with a montage of scenes showing Surinder and Taani living happily ever after.

Reviews and ratings

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. It has a rating of 7.1 out of 10 on IMDb, 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 4 out of 5 stars on Bollywood Hungama. Some of the praises and criticisms are:

"Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a simple yet beautiful love story that will touch your heart. Shah Rukh Khan delivers one of his best performances in a dual role, while Anushka Sharma makes an impressive debut. The film has a good balance of humor, emotion, romance, and drama. The music by Salim-Sulaiman is catchy and melodious. The film is a must-watch for all Bollywood lovers." - Taran Adarsh, Bollywood Hungama

"Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a charming film with a lot of heart. It showcases the versatility of Shah Rukh Khan, who plays both a meek husband and a flamboyant lover with ease. Anushka Sharma is a revelation as the spirited Taani. The film has some memorable scenes, such as the bike ride, the golden temple visit, the dance competition, and the climax. The film is a tribute to the power of love and transformation." - Rajeev Masand, CNN-IBN

"Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a disappointing film from Aditya Chopra, who fails to recreate the magic of his previous films. The film has a weak plot, which relies on a ridiculous premise of a wife not recognizing her husband in a different avatar. The film also drags in parts, especially in the second half. The film lacks the freshness and charm of other romantic comedies. The only saving grace is Shah Rukh Khan, who tries his best to salvage the film with his charisma." - Anupama Chopra, NDTV
