Potential toxic effects of Ag NPs ingested through the food web and depending on the season have not been addressed in marine bivalves. This work aimed to assess differences in protein expression in the digestive gland of female mussels after dietary exposure to Ag NPs in autumn and spring. Mussels were fed daily with microalgae previously exposed for 24 h to 10 μg/L of PVP/PEI coated 5 nm Ag NPs. After 21 days, mussels significantly accumulated Ag in both seasons and Ag NPs were found within digestive gland cells and gills. Two-dimensional electrophoresis distinguished 104 differentially expressed protein spots in autumn and 142 in spring. Among them, chitinase like protein-3, partial and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, that are involved in amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, carbon metabolism, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis and the biosynthesis of amino acids KEGG pathways, were overexpressed in autumn but underexpressed in spring. In autumn, pyruvate metabolism, citrate cycle, cysteine and methionine metabolism and glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism were altered, while in spring, proteins related to the formation of phagosomes and hydrogen peroxide metabolism were differentially expressed. Overall, protein expression signatures depended on season and Ag NPs exposure, suggesting that season significantly influences responses of mussels to NP exposure.

We have seen seven strong years of an upward-trending market. For various reasons, (interest rates rising, wages not keeping up with inflation, changes in tax deductions on real estate), various markets and certain price points are noticing a downward pressure. When this happens, your business habits are exposed.


When a marketplace changes, the gross and net numbers change. Two years ago, if you took 10 listings, 8 or 9 would sell. In the current market, if you take 10 listings, maybe 6 will sell. Motivation and price become paramount. That means I am going to have to go through more leads to find the people that are motivated enough to do what is necessary to get their property sold (read lower the price). This requires consistent, regular prospecting.


To investigate the changes in the fish assemblage of the Sine Saloum estuary (Senegal) over a 10-year period, it was surveyed during a complete hydrological cycle (three principal hydro-climatic seasons) first in 1992 and then in 2002-2003. The sampling protocol for the two surveys was identical, using the same sampling technique, the same collection periods, and the same sampling stations. The Sine Saloum is an inverse estuary in terms of its salinity gradient. It is affected by the intense drought that has occurred in this biogeographic region for more than 50 years. The estuary is also subjected to high fishing pressure. The second data-collection period followed a few years of higher recorded rainfall (approximately 35% higher than in 1992) and was characterized by increased fishing pressure (over 50% higher than in 1992). For the two study periods, the same set of indicators were calculated, including fishing indicators (catches, density, yields), size-based indicators (size structures, mean length, maximum observed length, size spectra), ecological indicators (richness, species diversity, K-dominance models, ABC curves, ecological categories) and trophic indicators (mean trophic level, trophic composition of catches). Overall, the main changes in the estuary's fish assemblage between 1992 and 2002 were (1) a loss in total biomass (40% less) for an equivalent species richness (approximately 55 species); (2) a decrease in the maximum observed lengths for many species (mean decrease of 17%); and (3) a decrease in the mean trophic level (more than 0.11 units). Analysis by bio-ecological and trophic category showed that the main species concerned were benthophagous species and, to a lesser degree, generalist predator species from marine origin that inhabit the estuary more or less permanently.

But making sure kids can get the best possible care will also require big, systemic changes. "I don't see how our pediatric health care system can be sustainable without major financial reforms," Kociolek says. That includes changing how pediatric care is reimbursed, making it more affordable for medical students to choose a career in pediatrics and investing more hospital resources into caring for kids.


SIDS are more vulnerable to disasters because many are heavily indebted, their economies are undiversified and hazard events often affect the whole territory.The magnifying effect of climate change includes sea level rise and associated flood and storm surge hazard, increasing cyclone wind intensity such as many Caribbean islands have already experienced this month, erosion, saltwater intrusion into coastal aquifers, water scarcity and drought.In the face of climate change, to which these islands contribute negligibly, the resilience gap is only going to grow unless there is investment which reduces the existing stock of risk, and strong policies are in place to ensure that new risk is not created through poorly informed or under-resourced investments in areas like tourism, education, health facilities, transport links and public utilities.Low resilience and high risk mean that investments in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation are likely to reap significant benefits for SIDS. Once this Atlantic hurricane season ends, there must be a reflection on how best to take the resilience agenda forward to the benefit of the people of these island states.


Two-year-old (plug+1) containerized Abies balsamea (L) Mill. and Abies concolor saplings were grown under various irrigation in the greenhouse to examine gas exchange parameters end of the growing period when they were exposed to extreme drought stress. Relative height growth (RHG) and relative root collar diameter (RRCD) were measured next to gas exchange parameters, such as net photosynthetic rate (Anet), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (E), intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE=Anet/gs), and water use efficiency (WUE=Anet/E). As a result, Abies balsamea saplings had a higher RHG and RRCD than Abies concolor. Species had a significant effect on leaf gas exchange parameters that Abies balsamea had a higher Anet, gs, and a lower iWUE than Abies concolor. Increasing irrigation increased Anet and E. The interaction of species and time was statistically significant for gs and iWUE measurement. İncreasing prolonged drought decreased gs and did not change iWUE values for Abies balsamea, while increased gs and reduced iWUE for Abies concolor saplings. Even though Anet, E, and WUE were not statistically significant under the interaction of species and time, there is a decreasing trend for Abies balsamea on these parameters. In contrast, Abies concolor had a decreasing trend on Anet, and WUE and an increasing trend for gs when the saplings were exposed to extreme drought or extended the dehydration period were observed. Abies balsamea had a better performance and drought tolerance than Abies concolor when exposed to a prolonged drought.
